Prevention of transmissions of contagious diseases is an urgent challenge to public health professionals and also to textile scientists since clothing and textiles are the most important personal protective equipment (PPE). In recent years, the outbreaks of Ebola have brought increased attention to protection of healthcare workers due to abnormal high infection rates over publics, indicating the need for advanced PPE materials. Thus, development of the truly biological personal protective textiles is urgently needed. This presentation will discuss the latest progresses in the areas of biological protective materials, more specifically on rechargeable and refreshable biocidal polymers and textiles. The biocidal polymers and materials are applicable as textile products to the protection of healthcare workers also can be employed in public cleaning and sanitization.





Gang Sun is a professor of Fiber and Polymer Sciences in Division of Textiles and Clothing at University of California, Davis, and has been conducting research on protective clothing materials, especially biocidal materials for biological protections, since 1995.  He is a recipient of the Olney Medal in 2016, the highest science award by the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorist (AATCC) and also is serving as the editor-in-chief of AATCC Journal of Research. He is a Changjiang scholar adjunct chair professor at Donghua University, Shanghai, China.
